Cannabinoids 101: What exactly is Delta-8-THC?
Delta-8-THC is one of the 113+ naturally occurring chemical compounds called cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Delta-8 is known for its properties that many users say are beneficial to their health and wellness.
Delta-8-THC’s chemical structure is similar to that of its famous sibling, delta-9-THC – the cannabinoid most people think of when the word THC comes up. Delta-9-THC is the cannabinoid responsible for the high effect in marijuana. Delta-8-THC is also psychoactive, but its effects are nothing like what you would experience with delta-9-THC.
Although they share the same chemical structure, name, and some effects, including the psychoactive, euphoric feeling, delta-8 and delta-9 THCs are very different compounds. The first difference is in the chemical structure. Delta-8-THC has a double bond on the eighth carbon, whereas delta-9’s occurs on the 9th carbon.
The double bond location makes all the difference when it comes to the effects and benefits of delta-8-THC. It’s the reason why delta-8-THC’s effects are milder and far more mellow than delta-9. Users describe feeling relaxed and clear-headed after taking delta-8-THC. This is why delta-8 is also referred to as “diet weed,” “weed-lite,” or “marijuana-lite.”
But people don’t just use it to get high legally. Research suggests that it may have several potential benefits to our health and wellness. The National Cancer Institute defines delta-8-THC as an analog of THC with potential pain-relieving, antiemetic, anxiety-relieving, and appetite-stimulating properties.
Is Delta-8-THC legal?
Hemp-derived Delta-8-THC is legal federally in the United States. The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp and its byproducts from the list of controlled products as long as it only contains up to 0.3% delta-9-THC by dry weight.
The 2018 Farm Bill mentions that all derivatives, cannabinoids, extracts, salts, and salts of isomers, whether growing or not, are legal as long as the delta-9-THC concentration does not exceed 0.3%. This language makes hemp-derived delta-8-THC perfectly legal federally.
That said, some states have chosen not to adopt the language used in the 2018 Farm Bill in their laws, making some delta-8 products illegal or not explicitly legal according to state laws.
